Holy Trinity 8th graders Excel at virtual stock market game trouncing teams from across SoCal
SAN PEDRO, CA June 3, 2010 -- This year, 10 Holy Trinity School students in three groups took first, second, and third places for 7th and 8th grades in the southern California region of The Stock Market Game sponsored by Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA). Out of 312 regional teams, the Holy Trinity School students placed fourth, fifth, and ninth. According to SIFMA, 750,000 students across the country participated in The Stock Market Game program this year.
In The Stock Market Game, students team-up to invest and manage a hypothetical $100,000 in stocks, bonds and mutual funds, learning cooperation, communication and leadership as they manage their portfolio over the course of the year-long project. At Holy Trinity School, the 8th grade computer class participates in The Stock Market Game by working in groups of three and four to choose stocks from four different sectors. After their initial investment, the students track their stocks, buying and selling selections during project. The game gives the students a glimpse of the financial markets in the classroom as they learn math, economics, and social studies.
For the Holy Trinity students, the experience culminated on May 27th, with a ceremony at the Bank of America building in downtown Los Angeles recognizing their significant accomplishments.
“We recognize that by participating in these types of programs our students can integrate a variety of skills from the classroom, including math and computer skills, into a ‘real world’ scenario,” said Linda Wiley, principal, Holy Trinity School/San Pedro. “We are clearly building the next generation of financial tycoons with this type of success.”
Holy Trinity School was founded in 1950 and is celebrating its 60th year of educating students in the South Bay.
